Below are some common questions about our products
What size Compostar bag do I need for my kitchen caddy?
Most council-supplied kitchen caddies hold 7–10 litres. Our 5L Self-Standing Paper Bags are designed to fit snugly inside standard caddies, or stand independently on your benchtop without one. For larger households or those emptying less frequently, our 10L bin liners offers extra capacity. If you're lining your outdoor wheelie bin, our 120L bags are the right fit.
How often should I empty my kitchen caddy into the FOGO bin?
We recommend emptying your caddy every 2–3 days, especially in summer. Even with Compostar's breathable paper technology reducing moisture by up to 44%, warmer temperatures accelerate the breakdown of meat and dairy. Emptying frequently keeps your kitchen fresh and gives fruit flies and maggots fewer chances to establish.
My bag starts to smell after a day or two — is that normal?
Some odour is natural as food breaks down, but it shouldn't be overwhelming. If you're noticing strong smells quickly, the most common causes are: meat or seafood scraps sitting uncovered, a caddy that isn't being emptied every 2–3 days, or a bag that isn't breathable (trapping moisture and accelerating anaerobic rot). Compostar paper bags allow moisture to evaporate, which significantly slows this process. Sprinkling a pinch of bicarb soda at the bottom of the bag can also help on hot days.
Are Compostar bags safe for worm farms and home composting?
Yes. Our bags are certified to AS 4736, which means they are approved to break down in both backyard compost heaps and worm farms. The paper material adds beneficial carbon to your compost and will not introduce microplastics or toxic residues into your worm environment.
What is the difference between your paper bags and your cornstarch film liners?
Both are AS 4736 certified and fully compostable. The key difference is performance and feel:
- Paper bags (5L): Breathable, self-standing, best for odour and moisture control. Ideal for kitchen benchtops and summer use.
- Cornstarch film liners (8L, 10L, 120L): Softer, more flexible, traditional bin-liner feel. Better for larger volumes and wheelie bins where a fitted shape matters.
If stopping bin juice and odour is your priority, paper is the better choice. If you want a large-capacity liner for your outdoor FOGO bin, film is more practical.
Can I freeze food scraps before putting them in the bag?
Absolutely — this is one of the best tips for managing meat, fish, and seafood scraps, especially in summer. Freeze them in a small container or wrapped in newspaper until the night before your FOGO collection. This eliminates odour almost entirely and prevents maggots from hatching. Just transfer the frozen scraps into your Compostar bag on bin night.
What is compostable certification?
Certification to AS 4736 verifies that a plastic product will fully break down in an industrial composting environment, ensuring it is truly compostable.
For a product to be certified, it must completely break down and return to nature within six months in an industrial composter, starting with fragmentation within 12 weeks.
AS 5810 has two distinct meanings: it can refer to the Australian Standard for home compostable plastics, or to a specific Trim-Tex architectural "Z"shadow bead.
The Australian Standard AS 5810 pertains to home compostability, whereas the Trim-Tex AS 5810 is a decorative building materialfor drywall.
Can I use Compostar liners for camping or large parties?
Absolutely! Thanks to our 72-hour waterproof and puncture-resistant technology, our liners are highly recommended for outdoor activities.
- For Camping: They lock in odors and prevent "bin juice" from leaking in your vehicle or tent.
- For Gatherings: They are strong enough to handle heavy volumes of food scraps from BBQs or family dinners without tearing.
What is the difference between "Biodegradable" and "Compostable"?
The difference is time and toxicity. "Biodegradable" simply means a material will break down eventually—this could take years and often leaves behind toxic microplastics. "Compostable" means the bag will break down completely into nutrient-rich soil within a specific timeframe (usually 90 days), leaving zero toxic residue. For your kitchen, always choose certified FOGO Bin Liners over generic biodegradable options.
What are our bags made of?
Made from plant-based, GMO-free materials and certified to AS 4736 & 5810, our bags are safe for you and the environment.
Tip: Unlike plastic, these materials break down naturally without leaving microplastics.
Are Compostar bags compliant with the new 2026 FOGO mandates in NSW and Victoria?
Yes. Our bags are Council Approved (Always check your local council guidelines for green bin acceptance.), and certified to Australian Standards AS 4736. Whether you are in Sydney or Melbourne, these are the certified compostable bags required to meet the 2026 FOGO mandates without risk of bin rejection.
Why are Compostar paper bags described as "Extra Strong" and "Heavy Duty"?
Because we’ve engineered them with advanced wet-strength technology to handle up to 10KG of kitchen waste. As the strongest FOGO bags on the Australian market, they are puncture-resistant against sharp bones and shells, ensuring they won't split like flimsy green plastic liners.
Are these FOGO bags truly 100% leak-proof for wet food scraps?
Absolutely. Our leak-proof paper bin liners feature a reinforced base that has been tested to hold liquid for over 72 hours without seeping. This eliminates the disgusting "bin juice" and summer smells, making them the ultimate odour-locked solution for your kitchen benchtop.
Can I use these "Freestanding" bags without a plastic kitchen caddy?
Yes! The freestanding design of our heavy-duty paper FOGO bags allows them to stand independently on your benchtop. This improves airflow, reduces condensation, and stops the fruit fly problem commonly associated with traditional compostable bin liners.
What causes FOGO 'bin juice', and how do I prevent it?
"Bin juice" is the toxic, foul-smelling leachate created when standard plastic liners trap the natural moisture of your food waste. Because plastic cannot breathe, moisture pools at the bottom and accelerates anaerobic rotting. You can prevent this by switching to Compostar kraft paper bags. Our highly breathable material allows for up to 44% moisture evaporation, drastically reducing excess liquid and keeping your kitchen caddy dry and hygienic.
Will wet food scraps cause the paper liner to tear and leak?
No. Unlike standard newspaper or cheap takeaway bags, Compostar paper caddy liners are engineered with advanced 70-Hour Wet Strength Technology. This cross-linked cellulose structure ensures that even when the bag is soaked with wet coffee grounds or fruit peels, the heavy-duty, fold-and-seal base remains 100% intact and absolutely leak-proof.
Are Compostar paper bags accepted by my local council?
Yes, the vast majority do. Compostar kraft paper caddy liners are strictly AS 4736 (Commercial) Certified Compostable, which is the exact standard required by most green wheelie bin FOGO programmes across NSW, VIC, and SA. While our bags are engineered to leave zero microplastics behind and strictly avoid unregulated plastics, FOGO rules can occasionally vary by municipality. We always recommend doing a quick check of your specific local council's website to confirm their exact guidelines.
